TRAILS WEST -- MARKERS OF THE CALIFORNIA TRAIL

In anticipation of plotting all of our markers on topo maps and then creating a driving guide for each branch of the emigrant trail, we take UTMs at each marker location.  Don Buck, Don Herman (partially hidden by Don Buck), and Dick Brock compare the readings they got from their GPS units. Because the readings from individual hand-held GPS units are subject to error, we take several readings at a location and average the results.  That is Don Enneking drilling the cross bar on Marker CR-40.  He is using the old method of drilling the holes necessary to accept a new inscription plate.  Photo by Richard Hallford.
