A TRAILS WEST MARKER

TRAILS WEST --
MARKERS OF THE CALIFORNIA TRAIL

"CARRYING THE MARKER"

One of the methods we have tried is to carry a marker to where it will be installed.  Our latest trail is shown in the above photo.  Three lengths of galvanized pipe were joined together with unions to form an approximately four foot long pole.  One pole was placed under each end of the marker, four worthy individuals grabbed hold of the poles and away then went.

It is obvious from the body postures shown in the photo that the marker is very heavy.

This is not a very good method because a marker is very heavy and because the people carrying it must walk to either side of the trail instead of on it.  This often means the carriers are walking through brush, stumbling over rocks and exposed roots, and generally having a difficult time moving.  There are, however, times when this method must be used.  Photo by Richard Hallford taken along the Truckee Trail.
