- FABRICATION OF NEW MARKERS
- Here are some photos showing how Trails West fabricates the markers used to mark the location of the emigrant trails to California.
- MOVING A MARKER
- Sometimes we have to move a marker from one location to another. Since markers are very heavy, various methods have been used to move them. See the ways we have tried.
- DIGGING
- To install a marker at a new location, a 2-foot deep hole must first be dug.
- DRILLING
- Before an inscription plate can be attached to a marker with four rivets, four holes must be drilled in the top bar. In the past this was a real chore; today it is fairly easy.
- POUNDING RIVETS
- Pounding flat the four rivets that hold an inscription plate in place is heavy work.
- PAINTING
- Each time Trails West renovates a marker, it must be painted. Sometimes markers need to be painted even if we do not change the inscription plate.
- PUTTING ON AN EMBLEM
- A National Historic Trails Emblem is applied to a Trails West Marker.
- CHECKING THE GPS DATA
- We take UTMs at every marker location. Normally, we take more than one reading and then compare our numbers to insure the most accurate position coordinates possible with hand-held GPS units.
- WHEN THE DAY IS DONE
- When the day is done, it is time for a beer and dinner.
