PILOT PEAK
HASTINGS CUTOFF

Pilot Peak located in eastern Nevada helped guide emigrants as they traveled the notorious Hastings Cutoff. This peak was a landmark because it is visible from many directions and for many miles. Today it is easy to see north of Interstate 80, west of Wendover, Nevada.

PILOT PEAK FROM DONNER SPRINGS

Pilot Peak viewed from Pilot or Donner Springs located west of the Peak.  A group of Trails West members had lunch at the springs while traveling for three days over the Hastings Cutoff during July, 2000.  This spring was one of the few locations that water was available along the Hastings Cutoff.

ROLLER PASS
ROLLER PASS

Roller Pass was one of the two passes used by emigrants as they crossed over "Donner Pass."  It is located between Mount Judah and Mt. Lincoln ESE of the Sugar Bowl Ski Area.  After leaving Coldstream Valley, emigrant traveled about 3 miles with a climb of about 240 feet in the last 0.1 mile.  They used roller logs at the top to help pull their wagons up the grade.  A view of Stevens Pass, the other "Donner Pass" crossing, can be seen on the People Page of this web site.
