Black Rock National Conservation Area
The Bureau of Land Management Winnemucca Field Office web site provides information on the Black Rock Desert High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area ("Black Rock NCA"). A map of the NCA, the legislation creating it, and its current status are provided.
The portion of the Applegate-Lassen Trail that lies between Lassen Meadows (Rye Patch Reservoir) and Vya, Nevada is included in this NCA.
Also available on this web site is information on Driving the Black Rock Region, the Burning Man, the latest fire information, and links to other Nevada State BLM District Offices.

The Donner Party
This Public Broadcasting System web site deals with the Donner Party and its trip west. It is part of the PBS series on the American Experience. Featured is the narrative that aired as part of the program. A map, called the "Route to Hell," shows the route of the Donner Party from Independence to Sutter's Fort. On this map are short descriptions or explanations about five locations along the route.
Another feature of this web site is a treatment of the Call of the West which provides some explanation of why people went west in the mid 1800's. Featured are "The Saints of Salt Lake" and the "huge exodus" of African Americans out of the south following the Civil War. In addition, links to the other programs included in the American Experience are provided.
Donner Party; New Light on
This is one of the most complete on-line sources of information about the Donner Party and its tragedy. Some of the information provided is an outline of the Donner story, identification of new sources of information, and correction of some of the myths and misperceptions that have become part of the Donner legend. A number of links to other Donner-related web sites are provided.
Donner Party; The
A web site devoted to the Donner Party and its travels westward. A daily log, diary quotes, materials from other sources, and maps of their travel are provided. To access these materials, click on "daily log of the Donner Party journey" on this site's home page.
Eldorado National Forest Interpretive Association; The
ENFIA's home page provides information regarding the association and the Eldorado National Forest. The Carson Trail, the Johnson Cutoff, and the many branches off of these two main trails pass through this forest.
Exploration and Travelways Sites of the Pacific Southwest Region.
The National Forest Service now has an assortment of web sites covering various historical locations and trails within its various forests. Many of these sites can be accessed from this web page. For example, you can go to the web pages for the Beckworth, the Lassen, and the Nobles Trails from this site. In addition, multiple web pages for places within the Eldorado and Tahoe National Forests can be accessed from this site.
A number of these pages refer the reader to the 1984 Guide to the Emigrant Trails written by Trails West for further information. As noted on the Trail Guides page of this web site, this 1984 Guide is no longer in print.
Fremont's Crossing of the Sierra Nevada
During the winter of 1843 - 44 John Charles Fremont and his fellow explorers crossed the Sierra Nevada through what we now call Carson Pass. Included in his party were Kit Carson and Charles Preuss. Fortunately for us, each of these three men left a written record of this crossing; a record that can now be enjoyed by going to this web site. In addition, information about land navigation and many links to related web sites are provided. This site is definitely worth a visit.

Greater Reno Area Weather Information
This National Weather Service home page provides extensive information on current and forecasted weather plus a variety of other related considerations. Select one of the numerous cities listed by name on the featured map and the current weather plus a forecast are provided. Nevada road conditions, a listing of all NWS and River Forecast Offices, and earthquake (Seismological) information are provided though the "Links" option in the menu on the left side of the home page. Either a Java or a Non-Java mode may be selected for viewing this site.
Hastings Cutoff, The
A portion of the "shortcut" to California described by Lansford L. Hastings in his controversial book, The Emigrants Guide to Oregon and California, is featured on this web site. Some history, numerous diary quotes, 30 photographs, and other interesting information is provided. While the "cutoff" ended west of present day Elko, Nevada, the information provided on this web site ends at Donner Springs, Utah (see a photograph of this spring on the Trail Photos page of this web site), northwest of present day Wendover, Nevada.
High Rock Trekkers
The High Rock Trekkers sponsor an annual 4WD trip across the Applegate-Lassen Trail every July. Their web site provides information about that outing as well as other things of interest that might be encountered along this trail. A number of interesting links are also identified.

Nevada Commission on Tourism; The
This web site provides a variety of information about travel and vacationing in Nevada. Included is a page devoted to the "Gold Rush Trail" which we usually call the "Emigrant Trail" or "California Trail." To access this information once the Nevada Commission on Tourism "Welcome" page is accessed, click on "Activities" and then "Gold Rush Trail."

Regional Fire Information

Northwest Chapter of the Oregon California Trails Association
This web site provides information about the activities of the Northwest Chapter. While this chapter of OCTA is concerned primarily with emigrant history in the states of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, it is also concerned with the trails in northern California that helped emigrants reach Oregon.
Old Yella Dog Ranch
Located at Vya, Nevada, on the Applegate Trail and Nevada State Road SSR A8, this working guest ranch offers a welcome stopover for folks touring the back country of Nevada. Since the ranch sits right on top of the Applegate Trail (the trail goes through the ranch property), you might consider staying overnight at this new, old fashioned ranch.
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association Home Page
This home page provides links to the Bureau of Land Management [BLM] and several other organizations. The BLM web site provides links to the Lassen-Applegate Trail, the Surprise Valley National Back Country Byway and High Rock Canyon National Historic Site, and the California National Historic Trail and Fandango Pass.
Soldier Meadows Guest Ranch
Located in the heart of the Black Rock/HighRock Emigrant Trails NCA, this guest ranch offers the only lodgings in the area. The ranch is a working cattle ranch where guests are welcome to ride along with the cowboys. At the end of the day, guests can relieve sore muscles by soaking in the ranch's hot springs. And the food is great. A number of scheduled activities are offered.
Trail of the 49er's Interpretive Center
This site provides some information about The Trail of the '49er Interpretive Center which is now located in its new location in the Chamber of Commerce Building at 395 6th Street (old Hwy 40) in Wells, NV. (6th and Lake Street )
Since creating the new Center in Wells is a grass roots effort, the dispays are still somewhat limited in content. But it is still worth a visit. In addition to viewing the displays, one of which is an approximately 80 year old covered wagon, purchasing books and other memorabilia, you can obtain directions to an example of wagon swales located just outside of Wells.
This web site also provides a slide show featuring the displays in the interior of the Center.
