A TRAILS WEST MARKER

TRAILS WEST --
MARKERS OF THE CALIFORNIA TRAIL

HISTORY

Much has been written over the years about the emigrant trail to northern California.  Some of this material has been published and made available to the general public; some has not.   In addition, some of what has been published is now out of date.  New information derived from the many diaries that have been surfacing and ongoing field research is showing that what was believed to be true about the trail may not be.  As we become aware of material that has not been widely distributed or material that changes the accepted history of the trail, we will make it available to you on this web page.

Currently, we have three commentaries to share with you.  More will be added as they become available.

  • History of the California Trail
A general overview of the developmant of the California Trail and its many branches.

  • The Route Through Truckee Meadows
The emigrant trail through the Truckee Meadows previously identified is shown to be incorrect.

  • Where was Jamison's Station Located?
There is some question about where Jamison's Station was located in the greater Truckee Meadows area.  This review of the available evidence shows what the location was not and what it might have been.

  • The first Crossing of Carson Pass
On February 20, 1844, "The Pathfinder," John C. Fremont, and his party of explorers crossed the Sierra Nevada over what we now call Carson Pass.   To learn more about this historic event, read this report.
