A TRAILS WEST MARKER

TRAILS WEST --
MARKERS OF THE CALIFORNIA TRAIL

FIRE PHOTOS

Here are six photos taken during the summer of 2001 showing the California Trail and the firebreak constructed by the BLM while fighting the fires.   The people shown in the photo are Don Buck (standing on or near the trail), and Marian McKenzie (in the truck).   Photos courtesy of Les McKenzie.

BURNED

Some of the burned area can be seen to the right of the firebreak.   The firebreak extends to the south sometimes crossing over and sometimes merging with the two-track (the trail) road between West Brush Creek and Willow Creek.

DAMAGE

All of the OCTA trail markers along this segment of the trail will have to be replaced.

THE FIREBREAK

Don Buck is standing in the fire break.  The truck is parked on the two-track that follows the California Trial.  The firebreak could easily become the accepted route because it is far easier to drive than the two-track.

The view is to the south.

TWO-TRACK

Don Buck is standing next to the two-track that follows the California Trail from Marker C-27 to C-27A.   The firebreak can be seen at the lower right corner of the photo.

The view is to the north.

A GPS READING

Don Buck took GPS readings at various points along the firebreak.  The burned area is to the left.

LOOKING NORTH

The firebreak extends to the north towards West Brush Creek.   The firebreak can be seen veering off to the left from the two-track.   The area burned during 2001 is to the left of the firebreak.
