A TRAILS WEST MARKER

TRAILS WEST --
MARKERS OF THE CALIFORNIA TRAIL

FIRE

During 2000 fire burned some of the range land through which the California Trail passes.   During 2001 fire again hit this area, this time north of where the 2000 fire had burned.

In fighting these fires, the BLM fire crews bulldozed a firebreak alongside and sometimes on top of the two-track road that follows the California Trail between Trails West Markers C-27 (West Brush Creek Draw) and C-27A (Fork In Trail).   As can be seen in some of the photos on the fire photos page, the firebreak appears to be the easier route to drive over.   It could easily become the accepted route of the California Trail unless something is done to obliterate it.

Nothing was done about the firebreak since there was not any budget left after fighting all of the fires that occurred during 2001.   Fortunately, Mother Nature seems to have taken care of the problem.   The firebreak is now almost covered by native plants and can hardly been seen.   It now appears that the firebreak will not replace the two-track as the route through the area burned.

LOCATION OF THE FIRE

The following map prepared by Don Buck shows the location of the "South Cricket Hot Burn" fire and location of the firebreak on or along side the California Trail.

THE BURNED AREA AND FIREBREAK

For the exact location of the fire and California Trail, see the information included in Emigrant Trails West, A Guide to the California Trail from the Raft River to the Humboldt Sink for Trails West Marker C-27A.

Six photos of the some of the burned area are presented on the fire photos page.
